Diwanieh Debate training in Wadi Musa
Wadi Musa, Ma’an South of Jordan
NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS
Diwanieh is a new and unique platform for public debates during which influential members of the public and government debate highly controversial political and social matters in plain view of local citizens. The initiative also conducts intense training courses for local youths in order to educate them on debate and public speaking skills.
The most skills debaters who graduate from Diwanieh training are chosen to take part in the main public Diwanieh alongside the decision makers and influential citizens in their corresponding governorate.
On the third week of February Leaders of Tomorrow implemented a compressed Diwanieh training course in the southern Jordanian governorate of Wadi Mousa. University students from the ages of 18 to 35 were recruited via social media and the Leaders of Tomorrow opportunity platform For9a.com.
During this training course participants were mentored and taught how to develop a wide range of skills including:
– How to speak confidently in public
– The differences between conversation and debate and how to differentiate between them
– How to effectively research a valid argument
– How to persuasively present a valid argument to an audience
– Debate etiquette
– How to single handedly organize and implement a public debate
This particular training method has been implemented in several Jordanian governorates and has proven to be highly effective. The debate format has been customized to suit the Diwanieh initiative and the public debates it implements.
Participants of Diwanieh training courses are also trained to form long term debate clubs in their assigned governorates, these groups then meet and apply the skills they learned while developing them even further.
This particular training course was one of the most successful so far. All participants where very engaged and proved to be skillful in all aspects of debate. As it was a crash course in debate, the training period was limited to 2 days only, however follow up training courses have already been planned and a training team will be returning several times in order to insure that the skills learned from the main course are maintained and developed even further.
